Our History

The Curfew Bell

When this bell was originally installed, it was located in a tower at the corner of First and Main. The bell rang at 9a.m. ,  Noon, 1:00 p.m., and 9:00 p.m.  It was also used as a fire alarm.

Local kids used to like to ring the bell on Halloween. One year the local Fire Chief put manure on the rope of the bell. You can imagine the kid’s faces when they realized what they had gotten their hands on!

The bell was replaced with a siren following a fatal fire in the 1940’s.
