Our History

The Piano

Sometime around 1872, the Hon. Samuel Jackson purchased a piano for his wife Ida.

The piano remained in the Jackson family until the mid 1930’s when Oliver May purchased the piano at an auction sale. Mr. May had been a bandleader in Europe before coming to Stonewall.

In Stonewall, he was leader of the local band and of a local church choir.  Mrs. May was a church organist and taught piano lessons. Dorothy Matthewson, Mr. May’s daughter, said the piano was out of tune and was missing keys when her father purchased it. The family donated the piano to the Town of Stonewall in 1990.
